- Abstract
The article discusses political, social, and media aspects of collective memory of the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia. It focuses on a comparative analysis of Tuol Sleng, a former torture prison turned into a museum in Phnom Penh, the execution and mass grave site of Choeung Ek, and killing fields near villages in Battambang province. It considers local, national, and international political and social influences on the design and interpretation of these memory sites, including activities of the Khmer diaspora, the resurgence of Buddhism, and various rituals of mourning.
