- Title
THE KANSAS POCKET MAPS OF OTIS B. GUNN AND DAVID T. MITCHELL: A Case of Nineteenth-Century Promotional Cartography.
- Authors
McEathron, Scott R.
- Abstract
The article discusses a series of pocket maps of Kansas published in the mid-19th century by Otis B. Gunn and David T. Mitchell, especially their importance in documenting the rapid growth of the state, the haphazard land policy of the U.S. government, and the importance of the Colorado gold rush. The background and previous experience with cartography of both Gunn and Mitchell is discussed, as is the partnership they formed in 1861. The publication history of the eight Kansas maps they produced is then discussed.
