- Abstract
Long after a child is adopted he or she may manifest an illness that could be better treated if the treating physician were able to review the medical records of the child's birth parents to identify whether or not the resulting illness has been inherited. This article briefly explains heredity and genetics. Further, how adoptive parents and adoptees can access birth parents' medical records is described. Each state has different laws proscribing the retrieval of medical records. Finally, inherited conditions and international adoptions are briefly noted.
