- Title
Christianity Changes the Conditions of Government.
- Authors
Fustel de Coulanges, Numa Denis
- Abstract
The article explores the ancient religion of Greece and Rome, focusing on its connection to the family and ancestor worship. Unlike later religions, this ancient religion was specific to each family, with worship limited to the family and outsiders not allowed to participate. The article suggests that this religion developed naturally in human societies and was passed down through generations. It also discusses the role of religion in ancient societies, where it played a central role in the family and governed laws and politics. With the rise of Christianity, significant changes occurred, including the introduction of a universal God accessible to all, breaking down barriers between nations and promoting justice and benevolence towards strangers and enemies. Christianity also separated religion from government, allowing for greater political freedom and individual liberty.
