- Title
Interdisciplinary materialism and the task of critical institutionalism.
- Authors
Buchstein, Hubertus
- Abstract
The article discusses the political deficit of traditional critical theory and the absence of political science in the early period of the Frankfurt School. It highlights how Horkheimer's focus on capitalist society led to a neglect of political institutions and associations. The article also explores the potential for Rational Choice theory to be used as a valuable instrument of Critical Theory, as it shares a materialistic approach and can analyze the collective irrationalities of individualistic society. It concludes by proposing critical institutionalism as a way to identify alternative institutional arrangements that encourage the formation and articulation of ideal preferences in modern democracies.
