- Abstract
The article presents a historical overview regarding the Chinese merchants and craft associations from the seventeenth and twentieth century. It mentions that these Chinese guilds have proliferated during the mid-eighteenth century onward. Their origins were deep-rooted during the sixteenth century can be found in associations with travelling merchants. It provides a comprehensive discussion regarding the contents of "Short Table of the Chinese Craft and Commercial Guilds, 1655-1911" and the 1918 "Regulations on Industrial and Commercial Associations" by the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce of the Peking government in China. Additionally, it features the different research perspectives regarding the Chinese guilds.
