Reappraising Communism and Nationalism.
- Authors
Mevius, Martin
- Abstract
The article discusses popular myths concerning the relationship between communism and nationalism. The misconception that nationalism and communism are wholly antagonistic and mutually exclusive is explored. The assertion that nationalism was universally oppressed in Eastern Europe before 1989 and emerged triumphant after the fall of the Berlin Wall is questioned. The construction of "socialist patriotism" by the communist states of Eastern Europe as means to form a bond of loyalty with workers and peasants is discussed. Literature after 1989 focusing on communist national legitimacy is analyzed.
