- Title
"Polluted With the Blood of Africa": Bigotry, Slavery, and the New Hampshire Colonization Society.
- Abstract
The article discusses the New Hampshire Colonization Society (NHCS), a chapter of the organization the American Colonization Society (ACS), which called for the deportation of free African Americans to Africa. It examines the New Hampshire chapter's formation in 1824 and the involvement of the Reverend Daniel Dana. The author suggests that New Hampshire members focused on the evils of slavery and white society and avoided the rhetoric of racial hatred and slave revolts used by the national organization. The chapter's financial troubles and abolitionist critiques of colonizationism are also explored.
