- Abstract
The article discusses English army and navy officers after whom New Hampshire and Vermont towns were named. It reveals that Amherst, New Hampshire and Amherst, Massachusetts were named after Jeffrey, Lord Amherst, an English major general during the Seven Years' War. Tamworth, New Hampshire, incorporated by New Hampshire Governor Benning Wentworth, commemorated Washington Shirley, Earl of Ferrers and Viscount Tamworth, Vice Admiral of the English navy. Halifax, Vermont was named after George Montague, Earl of Halifax, an army officer and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
