- Abstract
Brief Background An evidence based approach is required in the diagnosis and treatment Planning to achieve good functional and aesthetic results. Materials and Methods Orthodontists are somewhat skeptical about performing tooth movement on the teeth that have previously been endodontically treated or have a history of moderate or severe trauma. Careful assessment of literature is required to address several doubts regarding the potential risks or sequelae involved in moving teeth that have had previous endodontic treatment or surgical intervention. Discussion When considering the endodontic-orthodontic case, the clinician must consider the prognosis of any compromised tooth. Treatment considerations include the quality of previous root canal treatment, the health of the periodontal membrane, and making provision for careful application of orthodontic forces. From the evidence available, there seems to be no clinically significant difference in root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement between root-canal-treated teeth and vital teeth. Root-canal-treated teeth can be moved orthodontically to the same extent as vital teeth. Summary and Conclusions Orthodontists should keep a track of tooth movement and pulpal status of teeth that are prone to resorption, clinically and radiographically at regular intervals during tooth movement by involving an endodontist. Combined endodontic/orthodontic treatment planning can benefit tooth prognosis by facilitating endodontic treatment and ensuring optimal conditions for the final restoration.
