- Abstract
I have written extensively about Tribal-institutional relationships in an academic framework and have discussed roles and responsibilities of academia centering work in collaboration and equity; see Michelle Jacob, Emily West Hartlerode, Jennifer R. O'Neal, lanne Underriner, joana jansen, and Kelly M. LaChance, "Placing Indigenous Traditional Knowledge at the Center of Our Research and Teaching." Journal of Folklore and Education. Vol. 5 (2018): 123-141; Janne Underriner and joana Jansen,"The Role of institutions of Higher Education in Teaching indigenous languages:/chishkfin and Chinu/? Wawa," Language & Linguistics Compass 12.5 (May, 2018); and Joana jansen, Valerie Switzler, and Janne Underriner,"Language Revitalization and Vitality: Schools and Communities Working Togetheri' On Indian Ground: A Return to Indigenous Knowledge-Generating Hope, Leadership and Sovereignty through Education in the Northwest, edited by Michelle Jacob and Stephany RunningHawk Johnson (Charlotte: Information Age Publishing, 2020). I have argued, in Robert Elliott and Janne Underriner, "Building Future Language Leaders in a Participatory Action Research Model," Collaborating for Change, edited by Susan D. Greenbaum, Glenn Jacobs and Prentice Zinn (New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press, 2020), that it requires years to develop equitable relationships with Tribal communities: it takes "showing up at reservations and language programs and schools and participating in communities" (177); to develop mutual trust, time must be devoted to fostering respect and relationship with Indigenous people and communities. It is my hope here to tell a story Of relationship that embodies contradictions and how that story continues today. And to tell a story Of healing.
