The article discusses black New Yorkers' responses to the 1863 New York City Draft Riots. According to the author, examining black New Yorkers' efforts to assist members of their community during and after the riots can help researchers to identify community leaders and to understand their strategies for promoting racial equality and justice in the future. Topics discussed include masculinity, self-defense, and self-reliance.
