- Abstract
This article explores the challenges of recycling thermosetting polymers, specifically epoxy resins, which are widely used but difficult to recycle. Scientists have made progress in developing chemical processes to break the crosslinks in these materials, making them more recyclable. Examples include the development of a recyclable epoxy resin called Pecan, derived from a plant-based sugar, and a scalable method to recycle epoxy resin from wind turbine blades. Researchers at Washington State University have received a grant to develop a recycling technique for wind turbine materials, while scientists at Case Western Reserve University have made thermoset elastomers recyclable by converting them into vitrimers. These advancements have the potential to improve the sustainability and recyclability of thermosetting polymers, benefiting industries such as aerospace and adhesives.
