- Abstract
Being a teacher brings a profession with a complex and highly saturated responsibilities. It presents a number of occupational hazards that can affect both your health and the quality of teaching activity. Teaching activity is generally recognized by governments and organizations around the world. However, this sector often lacks proper attention on occupational health and, in many cases, their working conditions have to be improved. Objectives: To analyze Nicaraguan Secondary teachers' perception about their labor and social situation. Method: Non-experimental design, transectional and correlational. An ad hoc questionnaire to 157 subjects with 62 items was implemented. The validity of the questionnaire was achieved by piloting and validation process by experts. To analyze data, SPSS for Windows version 18.0 was used. Because nature of the data and research design, we conducted descriptive analysis and contrasts of hypothesis with nonparametric tests. Results: Nicaraguan Secondary Teachers feel recognized for their community and feel highly satisfied with their work. However, they consider living with a high prevalence of situations that threaten their health, poor physical conditions in places where they work and a health system that, in his opinion, does not meet their needs. Conclusions: The teaching vocation, social recognition and good relations between colleagues minimize teachers' risk perception. Teachers begin to be aware of their problems and health needs as they gain in experience; with more work experience, the greater the demand for resources and health care. It is highlighted that there is currently a need for specific training through preventive health programs, especially among younger teachers.
