A critique is presented of poems from the book "Rice" by Nikky Finney, who belongs to the writer's group Affrilachian Poets, which celebrates African American Appalachian poets. The combination of poetry and family photographs in "Rice," Finney's portrayal of the legacy of U.S. slavery, and the cultural value of myths are discussed.
