The article discusses the importance of heroic poetry in Tudor attempts to improve the English language by translation, by reform of prose style and by domestication of new poetic forms. Use of blank verse by Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, around 1540 to translate the 'Aeneid'; Surrey's creation of a vernacular English form equivalent to the dactylic hexameter of classical epic.
