FOURTH-GRADE UNIT ON STUDY OF ANIMALS OF THE ENVIRONMENT.
- Authors
Wilson, Merle
- Abstract
The article presents the author's experiences of incorporating a study of animals in the fourth-grade unit when she was a critic teacher of the fourth grade in the Maryland State Normal School. When she and her pupils decided to study the animals, they listed the animals found in their mountain environment on the board. As squirrel was the most easily available animal in the place, it was decided to study it. Before starting the study of the animals, some topics about each animal such as appearance, home, food, habits, enemies and protection were selected. Then the author led her pupils to the woods to have a close encounter with squirrels. And then they had class activities based on the observation.
