- Abstract
This article focuses on the aspect of radical nationalism among Mexican Americans and the rhetoric of Mexican American leaders José Angel Gutiérrez. In "The Rhetoric of Radical Black Nationalism: A Case Study in Self-Conscious Criticism," Karlyn Kohrs Campbell described a genre she labelled radical nationalism. The rhetoric attempts to create a group distinguishable from the rest of the American society. During the 1960s and 1970s Chicanos joined the African Americans, Native Americans, and other minorities to demand their rightful place in American society. Chicano rhetors had to create a unique rhetoric because of the many cultural differences between Chicanos and African Americans. To provide insight into how Chicano leaders used rhetorical discourse, this article analyzes the speeches and writings of a major Chicano leader, José Angel Gutiérrez.
