- Abstract
Researchers in the field of Information Systems (IS) have tried to understand the reasons behind social outcomes due to technology use. Social outcomes have mainly been attributed to either technology or social context, resulting in the emergence of two opposite schools of thought-technological determinism and human agency. This conceptual paper attempts to provide a new theoretical perspective by integrating the perspectives of technological features and social contexts. It postulates that differences in features of particular technologies embedded in particular social contexts can bring about different social outcomes and work practices in organizations. A brief outline about how to operationalize such an effort has also been discussed in the paper.
