- Title
Charlie Vest/Agatha Kratz: Sanctioning China in a Taiwan Crisis. Scenarios and Risks. Washington, D.C.: The Atlantic Council, Juni 2023.
- Abstract
The report "Sanctioning China in a Taiwan Crisis. Scenarios and Risks" examines the possible economic countermeasures that the G7 countries could take against China in the event of an escalation in the Taiwan Strait. It is noted that the G7 would likely impose sanctions and other economic measures against China, particularly targeting the financial sector, individuals and organizations associated with China's political and military leadership, as well as Chinese industries of military significance. However, comprehensive sanctions against China would incur massive global costs due to China's close economic relationships. Coordinating sanctions among the G7 countries would be a challenge, and disagreements over Taiwan's legal status could hinder the implementation of sanctions. Economic countermeasures alone would not be able to deter China from a war against Taiwan.
