- Title
Demaximizing Grice?
- Authors
Bohnemeyer, Jürgen
- Abstract
The article analyzes the set of maxims proposed under Grice's theory of conversational implicatures which deals with the relationship between language and logic. Topics discussed include the shortcomings of Grice's theory in terms of analyzing the extent of the demands imposed on the learner of conversational implicatures, the advantages of probabilistic pragmatics as an approach to understanding conversational implicatures and the obstacles to applying Bayesian approaches to implicatures.
