- Abstract
The article addresses the issue of academic freedom for teachers in the U.S. Teacher's claims to First Amendment protections have been supported by the Supreme Court. In one case, the court emphasized the right to teach, to inquire, to evaluate and to study as fundamental to a democratic society. The connection of the job of teaching to the freedoms of speech, belief and association is discussed. The function of school boards to determine curricular objectives and to permit teachers to tailor assignments for their students is also noted.
