- Abstract
This document serves as a preface to a collection of articles that were presented at an international symposium on embellished landscapes in Central and Eastern Europe. The symposium aimed to shed light on a type of landscape garden art that has been overlooked in garden historiography. The articles in the volume explore different approaches to embellished landscapes, examining their characteristics, the people involved, and their motivations. The document provides an overview of the topics covered in the volume, including the work of Wilhelm Gottlieb Becker and the development of specific embellished landscapes in various regions. It discusses the historical development of embellished landscapes, highlighting early efforts such as the "Parkwald" initiated by Count Johann Friedrich Karl Maximilian von Ostein in 1764. The collapse of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation also influenced the nobility's desire to legitimize themselves through physical space. The text concludes by emphasizing the need for further research and understanding of embellished landscapes and their significance in garden history.
