- Title
REGULATION OF QUALITY OF CARE IN HOSPITALS: THE NEED FOR CHANGE.
- Authors
WORTHINGTON, WILLIAM; SILVER, LAURENS H.
- Abstract
The article discusses the need to carry out changes in the regulation of the quality of medical care provided in hospitals in the U.S. It mentions that the public has raised concern over the quality of medical care delivered to public hospital patients amid allegations of inadequacies at various hospitals. It cites general laxity in enforcement as the major weakness of state regulations governing hospitals in which only a few states are said to have taken measures in ensuring that standards are observed. Ways on how to improve the regulation of hospitals are given which include creation of a new hospital code and reconsideration of the role of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAH) and incorporation of mechanisms that take complaints into account during certification.
