- Abstract
The aim of this study is to estimate the seroprevalence of brucellosis in dromedaries by two serological tests, ELISA and RBPT and assess the risk factors related to Brucella spp. This study is cross sectional with one hundred and thirty two (132) camel blood samples collected from South Algeria (Ghardaïa and El Menia area). A questionnaire has been created in order to collect the appropriate animal data (age, gender, breed, herd size, husbandry system, history of abortion and geographical repartition). The obtained seroprevalence was in the order of 5.3% and 1.4% using ELISA test and RBPT, respectively. Possible risk factors associated with brucellosis were investigated via univariate and logistic regression. The results showed a higher seroprevalence in females (P = 0.01) and animals living in flocks with the history of abortion (P = 0.004, OR = 2.76, CI 95% = 2.37–104.54). This study reveals for the first time that camel brucellosis is endemic in Algeria, and prophylactic measures should be taken to decrease the animal and human infection.
