- Title
EPA Finalizes Standards for Six PFAS.
- Authors
Moody, Chris
- Abstract
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced new standards for six per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water. The standards include maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) and goals (MCLGs) for PFAS such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). Water systems will have three years to conduct initial monitoring and issue public notifications. The EPA has also established monitoring requirements and reduced monitoring schedules for systems that meet certain criteria. Water systems will need to prepare for potential detections of PFAS and may need to install treatment facilities. The EPA is also considering listing certain PFAS-containing wastes as hazardous. The American Water Works Association (AWWA) is providing support and resources on PFAS.
