- Authors
Littner, M. M.; Kaffe, I.; Tamse, A.; Dayan, D.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the physical and psychological health of the dentist. It is stated that several physical ailments are induced and aggravated by the work environment, and the chronic exposure to stress factors acts as a threat to the dentist's physical and mental well-being. According to statistical studies, coronary disease and hypertension are 25% more prevalent among dentists than in the general population; and dentists suffer 2.5 times more psychoneurotic disorders as compared to other medical practitioners. It is suggested that recognition of the risks in the dental profession due to stress and strain is necessary for a successful preventive health program, which should be incorporated into the curriculum of all undergraduate and postgraduate programs in dentistry.
