- Abstract
This article discusses the role of 20th century Mexican religious leader Bishop Luis María Martínez in the Cristero War of 1926-1929. The author comments on the movement known as anticlericalism, an ideology adopted by the government that opposed religious authority in Mexico at the time. The Cristero War represented a rebellion against the government as well as a reaction to anti-Catholic policies.
