- Abstract
The article discusses the contributions of Baptists to American culture, politics, and society, focusing on the American revolution. The article describes Baptist contributions to the notion of religious liberty and toleration as a result of their suffering under state-sponsored persecution, the influence of Baptists pastors John Leland and Issac Backus on the disestablishment of churches and the doctrine of the separation of church and state, and the interpretation of the First Amendment in the U.S. Constitution by politician Thomas Jefferson. Other subjects under discussion include the work of theologian Francis Wayland, the work of politicians George Mason and James Madison, and religious discrimination of Baptists.
