- Authors
Zaga, Charissa J.; Wallace, Sarah; Freeman-Sanderson, Amy
- Abstract
The letter to the editor responds to the Japanese clinical practice guidelines for rehabilitation in critically ill patients. The authors of the letter, who are speech pathologists, express their disagreement with the recommendation made against the use of videoendoscopic swallowing assessment. They argue that comprehensive assessment of swallow function is crucial for evidence-based management of dysphagia in critically ill patients, and that videoendoscopic examination offers paramount diagnostic accuracy. They urge the authors of the guidelines to reconsider their position on videoendoscopic examination and make a conditional recommendation for its use in the critically ill.
