- Abstract
Values education begins in the family and it is internalized by continuing this education at school. The use of literary works is a frequently used method in terms of teaching values education in schools. The purpose of this research is to determine the positive values and negative elements of Edmondo de Amicis's book The Heart, and to give an idea about the level of support of this book's curriculum. The research was designed in the basic qualitative research design. In this research, the positive values and negative elements of the book Heart were examined in detail according to both the book review and the participant's views. The study group of the research is 29 primary school students studying in Bagcilar district of Istanbul. According to the results of the research, 32 positive values and 24 negative elements were seen in the Heart book. The most seen positive value in the book is love; The negative element is violence. According to the participant's views, the most positive value was cooperation-solidarity, while the most negative element was violence. While the part that the participants were most impressed with was the accident part where cooperation and solidarity were told, the character they felt closest to was Enrico. It was observed that the participants preferred their characters because they were similar to themselves and had positive values. Although it contains negative elements, the book was expressed by the participants in accordance with their level. It is seen that the positive values in the book coincide with the root values determined by the Ministry of National Education. In this respect, the Heart book can be used as an auxiliary book to the curriculum.
