- Abstract
This article is a case study about the crime of adolescents who underwent socio-educational measures of hospitalization at the São Jerônimo Social Re-education Center (CRSSJ) in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. It describes the history of the unit, its structure, its main objectives, routine activities and functions of the technical and administrative staff. In addition, the difficulties faced in the socio-educational unit, concepts of violence, and adolescents main values are analyzed. The study of the observed reality allowed us to know, even partially, the moral and social universe of adolescents in conflict with the law, their fears, expectations and ways of life that reflect the violence they practiced and experienced. It can be seen, from the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data collected in empirical research, that adolescents are subjected to the indiscriminate use of violence, the absence of mechanisms of sociability and social identity, the absence of humanistic values guiding human formation. These conditions have led to the occurrence of arbitrary and criminal actions capable of breaking with the human and valuing violence as an instrument of power, domination and exclusion.
