- Abstract
Ulcerative colitis is a long-term remitting and relapsing condition which can seriously impair patients' health and quality of life, limiting social and employment opportunities. For a QIPP pilot project supported by Dr Falk Pharma UK and independently designed and managed by Medicines Management Solutions (MMS), 363 patients with ulcerative colitis from 11 GP practices in Leicestershire were reviewed. A change in medication was recommended for 130 patients and actioned in 87. Six months after the change in medication, routine hospital visits had fallen by 47%, hospital visits for flare-ups by 60%, GP visits for flare-ups by 44%, and there was a 50% reduction in steroid courses prescribed. A cost saving was conservatively estimated at £30000. The results of this pilot were presented to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and accepted as a QIPP case study.
