CONFLICT OF INTEREST Matthew Sinton is the founder of The STEM Village, a non-profit group who work to improve the visibility of LGBTQ+ people in STEM workplaces. This commentary focuses on the necessity for LGBTQ+ people working in academia to feel safe, without fear of repercussions for revealing or expressing their identity. Queer: the term queer has long been considered a slur, but many people in our community have reclaimed the term to mean anyone who is not heterosexual or the gender that they were assigned at birth (cisgender).
