- Abstract
Displacement by way of migration to different countries in search of one's fortune has led to the raise of a lot of issues of which morality is one. The migrants, who move from their native country to the host country, transcend not merely the distance between the countries but also the moral boundaries, in pursuit of their dream of building their homes in the foreign shores. They fervently try to comply with the laws of the land, though they are discriminatory and disadvantageous to them. They meekly surrender to their societal norms in the matter of dress, food, education, employment, and style of life. Their submission to all these rigors of uneasy life seldom helps them remain satisfied. Sunetra Gupta in her novel, The Memories of Rain traces the moral anguish of an Indian migrant who squirms out of the intricate moral web and finds peace with her mind after breaking the marriage with her English husband, and returning to India.
