- Abstract
The main outcome measures were the technical, process and quality measures compared with the published NAPRC standards. Pathologically, the majority had no residual tumour (80.1%), a negative circumferential resection margin (CRM; 84.3% > 1 mm), an adequate lymph node harvest (67.7% > 12 nodes) and minimal response to neoadjuvant therapy (pathological tumour regression grade 2, 73.2%). The national data failed to meet targets for staging prior to definitive treatment (78.7%), carcinoembryonic antigen level obtained prior to definitive treatment (63%) and involved CRM rate (12.5%) (Table). From our analysis, we found that there are limitations in the process and outcome measure reporting from the current national database, the NCDB, that limit proper national audit for rectal cancer surgery.
