- Abstract
Prussia, which was part of the Holy Roman Germanic Empire and the German Confederation like Austria in the historical process, declared the German Empire in 1871 under the leadership of Bismarck. This stage, where German political unity was achieved, was not easily reached. Concerning the question of how with the question of how it came to the stage, this study investigates the role of Prussia, Zollverein and Bismarck in ensuring German political unity. From the perspective of Prussia, the research touches on the main critical junctures in 18th and 19th-century European history. Also, it seeks answers to how the political union process works and how it was achieved. The research, conducted with the contributions of balance of power (showing the power relations in Europe) and security communities approaches (explaining the general amalgam transformation), also bears traces of historical institutionalism. As a result of the research, it was seen that Prussia, Zollverein and Bismarck played a crucial role in ensuring German political unity. Prussia, for achieving the political union, on the one hand, had to struggle with France under the conditions of the European balance of power, and on the other hand, worked with Austria among the German states for a long time. Even under the strategy followed under the leadership of Bismarck, these states were fought and won. In addition, a strategic integration move to ensure German political unity was the construction of the German Customs Union, called Zollverein.
