The article focuses on a new study according to which, a subset of glia, which expresses the proteoglycan NG2, can fire action potentials. Excitatory and inhibitory synaptic input is received by these glia, apart from being vulnerable to ischemia selectively. It is stated that this finding contradicts the dogma that only neurons are excitable in the brain.
