- Abstract
The article presents a systematic review which examines the efficacy of treatments of pressure ulcers. Randomized controlled trials were identified by searching the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CINAHL databases. Search terms included 'decubitus', 'chronic wound', and 'pressure sore'. Most trials took place in acute care, mixed care, or long-term care settings. The results of trials evaluating nutritional supplements, wound dressings with calcium alginate and dextranomer paste, and topical growth factors are discussed. Researchers found little evidence to identify the most effective support surface or dressing. They also found little evidence regarding the benefit of routine nutritional supplementation or adjunctive therapies such as ultrasound or vacuum therapy compared with standard care.
