PERLIN, ROSS
- Abstract
The article looks at Taiwan-based electronics manufacturing company Foxconn, as of 2013. It notes the company manufactures consumer electronics products for U.S. and other foreign companies including Apple at numerous locations, including its huge facility in the Shenzhen, China, Special Economic Zone (SEZ). It describes episodes and controversies related to the company's labor policies, including several 2010 worker suicides, excessive forced overtime, dangerous working conditions, and harsh disciplinary tactics. It says that as labor protests are pushing wages higher, the company is expanding into lower-wage locations including India, Malaysia, and rural parts of China. Topics include rural-urban migrant workers, underage workers labeled "interns," and fair labor practices auditing.
