- Title
New Screening Tool Reveals Genes Essential for Cancer Cells' Survival.
- Authors
Hampton, Tracy
- Abstract
The article reports on a laboratory technique which may make finding the genetic factors involved in tumorigenesis and cancer development easier for cancer researchers by allowing them to screen for genes that are essential for cancer cells' survival. The technique uses a phenomenon called RNA interference to silence genes and assess which genes, when muted, caused cancer cells to die. The research, conducted by Stephen Elledge and Gregory Hannon, evaluated several types of cancers, and its findings are limited to cancer cell lines and may not have relevance to human tumors until additional research is conducted.
