- Abstract
This study discusses the prevalence of HIV-1 in blood donations since an educational program and blood-safety policy was implemented in South Africa. The incidence of HIV-1 and residual risk for all donations was estimated from the South African National Blood Service's data, using an incidence-window period model and the less-sensitive enzyme-linked immunoassay. Statistics show donor demographics, residual risk in first-time donors, HIV prevalence, and projections for donations made in 2001-2002. The research indicates that HIV-1 prevalence has declined since the donor selection policy was introduced in 1999.
