- Abstract
This article reports on the launch of the first-ever prospective clinical trial to identify risk factors that contribute to the development of temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders (TMJDs) by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. The study, called Orofacial Pain: Prospective Evaluation and Risk Assessment, will receive $19.1 million to follow 3,200 healthy individuals from 3 to 5 years to see how many develop TMJD. Those who do should provide researchers with clues to the early stages of TMJDs and help them determine which genes or other factors may be involved. The main symptoms of TMJDs, pain and restricted jaw movement, occur in 5% to 15% of individuals in the United States.
