The author discusses the use of supplemental breast cancer screening in women with dense breasts. He relates the study "Supplemental screening for breast cancer in women with dense breasts: a systematic review for the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force," by J. Melnikow and colleagues which shows the benefits and harms of supplemental screening with ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or digital breast tomosynthesis in women with dense breasts and negative mammography results.
