The Relationship between National Normative Frameworks on Internal Displacement and the Reduction of Displacement.

- Abstract
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement. With global displacement having increased substantially over the past five years, reduction of internal displacement, which involves preventing future internal displacement and finding solutions for protracted displacement, is one of the key challenges facing States today. Over the past 20 years, regional bodies and States have integrated the Guiding Principles into national normative frameworks specific to internal displacement. There is a positive statistical relationship between these frameworks and reduced displacement, although further research into their implementation and enabling factors for their success is needed. Advances in measuring prevention and solutions can provide a stronger evidence base for reducing displacement, if used consistently at the national level, and can also provide further proof of the value of national normative frameworks. The successful implementation of such national frameworks and effective means to measure reduced displacement require the active and consistent participation of internally displaced persons.
