In ancient cultures the status of children had its sacral basis in the mythical tradition, as well as the strict rule of selection of the newborn children that will be brought up to become members of the society. In the Greek tradition we find many examples of infants exposed at birth and of young heroes killed before reaching the adult age. We know several heroic cults, with peculiar initiatory characters connected to specific mythical episodes.
