- Abstract
Export is a vital policy tool to accomplish regional development. In a wide point of view it is assumed that export contributes regional development and developed regions takes more share from export. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between development and exports in Southeastern Anatolia Region during 1996-2010. Classification of State Planning Organization (2003) on development levels of provinces has been based on as indicator of development. Export data has been taken from Undersecreteriat of Foreign Trade and Turkish Statistical Institute. In this context, the export shares of provinces in Turkey and Southeastern Anatolian Region have been associated with socio-economic development levels. Within this framework, socioeconomic, geographical and demographical structure of the region is discussed firstly. Leading industries in the region, socio-economic developmental status and public investments of the region were also analyzed grounding on Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) system. Finally, the structure of the region's exports and its development with the relationship between exports and development is also analyzed. As a result, it has been observed that generally the share of exports increases when the developmental status of provinces improves in Turkey and Southeastern Anatolia Region.
