- Abstract
The adhesive dentistry is improving even more the development of techniques and systems for the cementation of indirect restorations. The adhesive resin cements are widely used in cementing onlays, inlays, pins and venners, however, with the incorrect use of adhesive agents, the outcome can result in postoperative sensitivity and microleakage. In order to simplify the procedure, the selfetching resin cements have emerged as a new subgroup, gathering favorable characteristics in one product. The aim of this literature review was to verify the mechanical and physical properties and performance of self-etching resin cements, including their advantages, disadvantages, indications and contraindications. The application of this cement does not require pretreatment of the substrate or the dental piece. However, the selective etching enamel is beneficial, but negatively influences when used in dentin. As for the bond strength of cementing agents and pins, they show adherence comparable to other cements in root dentin. It was concluded that the performance of self-etching resin cements is satisfactory when adhered to dentin, and that union with enamel seems to be weak in comparison with conventional resin cements, so it has to be used with caution in partial crowns with considerable enamel surface.
