- Abstract
A popliteal artery aneurysm (PAA) is an abnormal weakening of the popliteal artery, located behind the knee, causing it to balloon out to more than 1.5 times its normal diameter. PAAs are rare, affecting only 0.1-1% of the general population, and are more common in men between the ages of 50 and 70. Risk factors for PAA include male sex, advanced age, smoking, hypertension, presence of other aneurysms in the body, and diabetes. PAAs can be diagnosed through imaging tests such as vascular ultrasound, computed tomography angiography (CTA), or magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). Treatment options include medical management and surgical intervention, with open surgery being the preferred approach. It is important to distinguish PAA from other conditions that may cause similar symptoms, such as peripheral artery disease (PAD), popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES), popliteal (Baker) cyst, and adventitial cystic disease.
