- Abstract
The studies were conducted in 2008-2010 in the Experimental Station "Swojec" belonging to the University of Environmental and Life Sciences. Strict two-factor field experiment on sugar beet cultivation systems was carried out in triplicate. The main factor were tillage systems: 1) no postharvest tillage, fall ploughing 20 cm, 2) post-harvest ploughing, stubble catch crop, fall ploughing 15 cm deep, 3) post-harvest ploughing, stubble catch crop left on the surface till the spring as mulch, 4) no post-harvest and fall tillage. For all tillage systems, after forecrop harvest, the straw was left in the field and before sugar beet sowing the spring tillage set was used (rotary harrow and subsurface roller). The subplot were the varying levels of nitrogen fertilization: 80, 120 and 160 kg N ha-1. The aim of the studies was to determine the effect of different tillage systems on the yield of sugar beet and the technological value of roots after the application of the different rates of nitrogen. The root and leaves yields of sugar beet which was sown in straw mulch under lack of post-harvest and fall tillage significantly decreased as well as sugar yields in comparison to conventional tillage. Using shallow ploughing or abandoning the plough compensated by stubble catch crop incorporation into soil did not cause any changes in yield of sugar beet.
